American Legion G.I. Joe Post 244 was founded in the aftermath of World War II by returning veterans determined to continue their service to fellow veterans and to the Jeffersontown community. The Post received its official charter on July 16, 1946, marking the beginning of nearly eight decades of continuous service.
The name “G.I. Joe” was chosen to honor the everyday American serviceman—the citizen-soldier. The term was widely recognized during World War II through the work of Bill Mauldin, whose iconic cartoons captured the grit, humor, and sacrifice of American troops. The name reflects the Post’s commitment to representing all veterans, regardless of rank or background.
In 1949, Legionnaires constructed and dedicated the original Post home with their own labor. Early facilities were humble by necessity, but the building quickly became a gathering place for veterans, families, and community events. As Jeffersontown grew through the 1950s and 1960s, Post 244 grew alongside it—expanding membership, programs, and civic involvement.
A defining chapter in the Post’s history began in the mid-1990s with the creation of Jeffersontown Veterans Memorial Park. What started as a proposal for a small flag display evolved into a city-supported veterans park, now recognized as Kentucky’s first park dedicated solely to veterans. Post 244 has remained deeply involved in ceremonies, memorial events, and ongoing stewardship of the park, including the Veterans Memorial Plaza and Freedom Wall.
American Legion G.I. Joe Post 244 is also nationally recognized for its annual U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony, one of the largest in the country, during which thousands of worn and unserviceable flags are respectfully retired each year in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.
Today, Post 244 continues its mission through veteran advocacy, youth programs, patriotic ceremonies, community service, and partnerships with the City of Jeffersontown. Guided by the values of service, honor, and country, G.I. Joe Post 244 stands as a living legacy of those who served—and those who continue to serve—our nation and community.
